Abernathy Family

Millicent Abernathy, originally from Charleston, Illinois, has called the Champaign-Urbana area home for nearly four years. She acknowledges her favorite thing about the area as the diversity of the community.

Millicent’s educational journey took her from Charleston High to Spokane West Valley High, followed by earning her GED through Pathways in Mattoon. She later obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Illinois University and is currently enrolled at Walden University to obtain a Master’s Degree in Social Work in hopes of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Currently, Millicent serves as a Foster Care Case Worker for the Center for Youth and Family Solutions (CYFS), a role she has dedicated herself to for almost a year. Millicent is a devoted mother to two girls, always putting her children first in everything she does. In her free time, she loves reading and enjoys sharing breakfast with her family at Sweet Basil, a local favorite.

Millicent’s journey with Habitat began during her undergraduate studies when she learned about the organization’s mission. “I thought that I was a good candidate to apply,” she says. She believes that the stability provided by Habitat is crucial for people like her.

Reflecting on the homebuilding experience, Millicent shares, “My favorite part has been seeing the changes to my future home over time. It makes me happy to know that one day my family will be here and not have to move again.” She is grateful for the deep involvement and support from Habitat’s staff, which has made her feel worthy and valued throughout the process. “Habitat has true heroes!” she says.

Millicent envisions her life changing profoundly through this experience, gaining a greater appreciation for others and spreading blessings within the community. She hopes to demonstrate to her daughters the importance of perseverance and the significance of providing a safe, stable home.

To the partners, volunteers, and organizations involved in building her home, Millicent extends her deepest appreciation and admiration. “Getting my home would not be possible without their willingness to help,” she emphasizes. Millicent’s journey with Habitat for Humanity is a testament to the power of community and the profound impact of giving families the opportunity for stability and growth.
