Mohammad Akhtary is grateful for the opportunity to purchase a home in Champaign County—the area the Akhtary Family now call home—after spending most of their lives in Afghanistan. They look forward to the stability of homeownership and the opportunity to establish permanent roots in the community that welcomed them nearly three years ago, listing the kind people as their favorite thing about the area. Mohammad is currently employed at CKS Packaging, and the family enjoys visiting the park and playing soccer in their free time.
The Akhtary Family includes five children, three boys and two girls, ages 14, 13, 9, 6, and 1. Mohammad describes their children, who inspired them to work towards a better life, as gentle and caring. The Refugee Center encouraged and assisted the family in applying for the opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity and the Illinois Solar Decathlon team at UIUC to purchase a home. They acknowledge the importance of opportunities like the Habitat Homebuyer Program by sharing, “It will be a great comfort for us to have a nice, affordable place to live. We are so excited to move into a home of our own”.
To the partners, volunteers, and organizations that made the Akhtary Family home possible, here’s a message for you: “They have done so much and made everything with thought and care. Everything is beyond what we imagined. Thank you!”
