Home #149
As a lifelong resident of Champaign, Kyaira Gatson has long hoped for a safe, stable home of her own to build a better future for her growing family. Kyaira currently works for the transportation department of Unit 4 School District, a role she has held for three years.
Kyaira’s experience with Habitat for Humanity started long before she applied to become a homeowner herself, with her mother partnering with Habitat a decade before. Her mom’s experience of achieving stability through homeownership was inspiring, but it was her children who gave her reason to strive for a stronger future. Outside of work, Kyaira is a dedicated mother of six children, four sons and two daughters—devoted to making memories and spending time together as a family. Together, their family enjoys cooking meals and hosting movie nights. Kyaira hopes that throughout the homebuilding process, her children will see that it is possible to overcome challenges and build a better future with determination and faith.
Reflecting on the opportunity to partner with Habitat, Kyaira shares, “It is important that people have opportunities like this because it’s a helping hand, not a handout. It gives hardworking people the chance to build a home, equity, and a better future for their families while contributing to stronger communities”. Some of the highlights of her journey have been building relationships with other families and volunteers, the hands-on experience of building homes, and seeing their dream of homeownership become a reality.
To the partners, volunteers, and organizations helping to build her home, Kyaira expresses heartfelt gratitude: “I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in building my home. Your time, hard work, and generosity are helping make my dream of homeownership a reality. I am truly thankful for your support. I will always appreciate the opportunity you have given me to build a brighter future.”
