The Moore family includes father Kenneth (Kenny), mother Tekeyra, and their three sons, ages 8, 14, and 21. When asked to describe their sons, Kenny and Tekeyra are proud parents, agreeing that “they all are very smart and have special skills and talents.” Tekeyra currently works for Carle Hospital, after many years as a Personal Care Giver, and she truly enjoys getting to help others and seeing the joy in their faces. Tekeyra’s dedication and passion for caregiving has recently led to her acceptance into a Sterile Processing Tech class on a full paid grant. Kenny is currently not working, due to a history of health battles, but he and Tekeyra are both former tellers at Great Lakes Bank.
Kenneth and Tekeyra have always dreamed of having a home of their own, describing it as “a gem that we can pass on to our family”. Unable to get a traditional mortgage loan, and in need of a handicapped accessible space for Kenny, it seemed like the Moore family kept hitting various road blocks on their path to home ownership. They had learned about Habitat from Kenny’s mother, who is a Habitat partner herself, and after working on their money management skills and improving their credit, the Moores were chosen to be our Habitat partner family.
The Moore family has truly enjoyed seeing the Habitat home building process unfold and there are times that they feel still in shock their dream of home ownership is coming true. Says Tekeyra, “My husband will be able to enjoy a good quality of life with an accessible home without restrictions. We can create new memories and celebrations in our new home. We thank God that we were selected!”
