Jennifer Popis has been an enthusiastic member of the Champaign-Urbana community for 27 years. After graduating from Champaign Central High School, Jennifer continued her education at Parkland College where she received an associate’s degree. Now, she is back in school at Eastern Illinois University pursuing her bachelor’s degree in special education. Jennifer currently works as a teacher’s aide for Champaign Unit 4 Schools, where she has been dedicated to supporting students.
Jennifer finds great joy in the sense of community Champaign Urbana offers, particularly her church, the local community gardens, and the farmer’s market. Her adoration for gardening has inspired a dream of one day creating her own backyard garden, where she can grow food for her family.
As a thankful mother of two daughters, Jennifer is looking forward to being able to provide her family with a safe and stable home. Her youngest daughter, a high school junior, excels academically and is an active member of the Art Honor Society and National Honor Society. Her eldest is a devoted mother of two and is working toward becoming a nurse. Their family also includes their beloved cat, Kion. Jennifer shared, “I think owning this house will bring more happiness into our lives. The house will feel like something they can come back to whenever they need.” She especially cherishes the chance to include her youngest daughter in the process, making memories together as they build their future home.
After being accepted to the program in 2012, Jennifer found herself unable to complete the program. Years later, through personal growth and reflection, she felt called to try again. This time, she was selected and has embraced the experience wholeheartedly. Through this process, Jennifer has not only learned valuable skills about homeownership and construction, but has also formed deep connections with fellow participants, whom she now considers family.
Jennifer is thankful for this opportunity and for everyone who has contributed to making it possible. She acknowledges the importance of opportunities like the Habitat Homebuyer Program by sharing, “The program helps people build relationships and a sense of belonging to a neighborhood and community.”
To the partners, volunteers, and organizations involved in building her home, Jennifer expresses heartfelt gratitude: “I thank the Lord for each and every one of you, and I pray He blesses you and your families. I look forward to meeting you and breaking bread together. Thank you for your act of kindness and giving.”
